Reduced range does not automatically mean that the battery has failed. Real-world range is affected by:

  • low tyre pressure
  • brake drag
  • cold weather
  • rider weight and additional load
  • hills, wind and rough surfaces
  • frequent acceleration and stopping
  • high-performance riding modes
  • battery age and storage history
  • the scooter’s general mechanical condition

Compare journeys under similar conditions. A cold, hilly journey cannot be directly compared with a warm journey on flat, smooth ground.

A gradual decline can be part of normal battery ageing. A sudden major reduction, rapid percentage changes, unusual charging behaviour or unexpected shutdowns should be professionally assessed.

5. The scooter cuts out under load

A scooter that switches off during acceleration or on a hill may have a weak battery, excessive voltage drop, overheating, a poor electrical connection or another controller or motor-system fault.

Low tyre pressure and brake drag can also increase the load placed on the electrical system.

Do not repeatedly test a cutting-out scooter at full throttle. Record the displayed battery level, riding mode, temperature and circumstances in which the fault occurs, then arrange an inspection.

Tyres are safety-critical wear items and require regular checks.

Pneumatic tyres

Check the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, visible tread, sidewalls and valve. Do not ride on a flat or severely underinflated tyre, as this can damage the tyre, tube and wheel.

Solid tyres

Solid tyres cannot puncture in the same way, but they can still crack, split, deform or separate from the wheel. Replacement can require specialist tools and correct installation.

Wheel movement

Stop using the scooter if the wheel moves sideways, the axle appears loose, the rim is damaged or there is grinding from the bearings.

A light occasional sound does not always indicate a serious fault, but persistent scraping, poor braking or a wheel that is difficult to rotate requires attention.
