Cold weather can reduce the range and performance of an e-bike or e-scooter battery. A journey that is comfortable in summer may use noticeably more charge on a cold winter day—even when the battery is healthy.
In many cases, this seasonal reduction is temporary. However, charging or storing a battery outside its permitted temperature range can increase the risk of damage. This guide explains what cold weather does to lithium-ion batteries and how to use, charge and store yours more safely during winter.
Why does battery range fall in cold weather?
Lithium-ion batteries move charged particles called lithium ions between internal electrodes. At lower temperatures, that movement becomes slower and the battery’s internal resistance increases.
The result can include:
- reduced usable range
- slower acceleration or weaker assistance
- faster movement of the displayed battery percentage
- temporary voltage drops under heavy load
- earlier power reduction or shutdown
Cold air also affects other parts of the journey. Tyre pressure normally falls as temperature drops, and soft tyres create more rolling resistance. Winter headwinds, wet roads, heavier clothing, hills and frequent acceleration can reduce range further.

Shorter journeys per charge
The battery may deliver less usable energy, so do not plan winter journeys using your best summer range.
Reduced power
Some battery-management systems limit output when the cells are very cold, helping to protect the battery.
A changing battery display
The indicated percentage may fall quickly under load and recover slightly when the vehicle is resting.
Longer preparation time
A removable battery stored indoors may need to be fitted shortly before the journey rather than left outside overnight.
Can you charge a cold battery?
Only charge the battery within the temperature range specified by its manufacturer. Charging limits are often narrower than riding limits. For example, some major e-bike systems specify charging from approximately 0°C, but this must not be treated as a universal figure.
If you bring a battery in from freezing conditions, allow it to warm naturally in a dry, suitable location before connecting the charger. Check that the battery casing, charging port and electrical contacts are dry.

Let the battery stabilise naturally
After a cold or wet journey, place the vehicle or removable battery in a dry location and allow its temperature to adjust naturally.
Check for moisture and damage
Make sure the casing, port and connections are dry. Look for cracks, dents, swelling, loose parts or signs that the battery has been dropped.
Use the correct charger
Use the charger supplied with the battery or one specifically recommended by the manufacturer. A plug that physically fits is not proof of compatibility.
Charge where you can monitor it
Use a hard, flat surface away from combustible materials and escape routes. Do not charge while asleep or while nobody is present.

How to improve winter range
- Begin with a suitably warm battery: if it is removable and the manufacturer permits indoor storage, keep it in a dry location within the recommended temperature range.
- Fit it shortly before departure: avoid leaving a removable battery attached outside for hours before riding.
- Check tyre pressure: use the range stated by the tyre or vehicle manufacturer.
- Use a lower assistance mode: select Eco or a similar setting where conditions allow.
- Accelerate smoothly: repeated hard acceleration draws more power.
- Use the gears properly: on an e-bike, select an appropriate gear instead of making the motor do all the work.
- Allow a range reserve: plan to arrive with charge remaining rather than using the displayed range as a guarantee.
- Reduce unnecessary weight: additional load increases the energy required.
Condensation after a cold journey
Bringing a very cold battery into a warm room can cause moisture to form on its surfaces. This is similar to condensation appearing on cold glasses or windows.
Do not immediately connect a visibly damp battery to its charger. Let it adjust naturally in a dry, ventilated location and make sure the charging port and contacts are dry before use. Never open the battery casing to dry or inspect the cells yourself.
Winter battery storage
If you will not use the vehicle for several weeks, consult its manual for the correct storage temperature and charge level. Requirements vary between battery manufacturers, so a universal percentage should not override the instructions for your model.
As a general safety checklist:
- store the battery in a dry place protected from weather and large temperature changes
- keep it away from direct heat, flammable materials and escape routes
- do not leave it connected to the charger for long-term storage
- check its charge periodically as directed by the manufacturer
- keep the battery and charger away from children and pets
- do not store or charge a battery that has been damaged or submerged
When is reduced range a sign of a fault?
A temporary loss of range in cold conditions can be normal. Arrange an inspection if:
- the reduced range continues in normal temperatures
- the battery will not charge with the correct charger
- the vehicle repeatedly cuts out under an ordinary load
- the battery or charger becomes unusually hot
- the casing is cracked, swollen, dented or leaking
- you notice an unusual smell, hissing, popping or smoke
- the battery has been dropped, crashed, modified or exposed to water

Why does my range fall in winter?

Only if the shed remains dry and within the manufacturer’s permitted storage-temperature range. Many sheds become damp or very cold.
When should I book an inspection?
Seek professional help if faults continue at normal temperature or the battery shows heat, swelling, damage, leakage, unusual smells or repeated errors.
A note about electric scooter use in the UK
