Lithium-ion batteries store a large amount of energy in a compact space. A correctly manufactured and properly used battery is generally dependable, but damage, water ingress, unsuitable chargers, poor-quality replacement parts and unsafe charging can create a serious fire risk.

This guide explains how to charge an e-bike or e-scooter battery safely, how to choose the correct charger, which warning signs require immediate action and how everyday habits can help preserve battery condition.

Never charge a battery that is swollen, leaking, cracked, wet, unusually hot, producing an unfamiliar smell, making hissing or crackling sounds, or showing burn marks or melted connectors. Stop using it, keep people away and obtain specialist advice. Do not attempt to open or repair the battery.

Safe Charging Checklist

1. Inspect the battery

Check the battery casing, mounting area, charging port and visible cables before connecting the charger.

Stop if: the battery is damaged, swollen, leaking, wet, unusually hot or behaving abnormally.

2. Use the correct charger

Use the charger supplied with the product or one specifically approved by the manufacturer for that exact battery.

Stop if: the charger, cable, plug or connector is damaged, loose, scorched or excessively hot.

3. Check the charging port

The charging port must be clean, dry and undamaged. Insert the connector carefully without forcing it.

Stop if: contacts are bent, corroded, burnt, wet or pushed into the port.

4. Choose a safe location

Charge on a hard, flat and stable surface where heat can dissipate. Keep the battery and charger uncovered.

Never charge: in a hallway, stairwell, doorway or anywhere that could block an escape route.

5. Remain present

Charge while awake and able to respond. Keep a working smoke alarm in or near the charging area.

How to Charge an E-Bike or E-Scooter Battery

  1. Read the manufacturer’s instructions. Check the specified charger, charging sequence, normal indicator lights, charging time and permitted temperature range.
  2. Let the battery cool naturally. After riding, allow a warm battery to return to a normal temperature before charging. Do not use heaters, hairdryers or other direct heat.
  3. Inspect the battery and charger. Look for impact damage, swelling, leaks, split cables, loose connectors, corrosion, water or burn marks.
  4. Choose a safe charging area. Use a hard, flat surface away from combustible materials, direct sunlight, moisture and escape routes.
  5. Connect everything in the manufacturer’s recommended order. Do not force the plug or use adapters and modified connectors unless specifically approved.
  6. Remain awake and present. Check periodically for excessive heat, unusual sounds, smells or abnormal charger behaviour.
  7. Disconnect after charging finishes. Do not leave the product connected indefinitely unless the manufacturer expressly states that this is appropriate.
  8. Allow the charger to cool before storage. Keep cables loosely arranged and protect the connector from damage and moisture.

Why the Correct Charger Matters

Battery chargers are not interchangeable simply because their connectors fit. A charger must have the correct output voltage, charging current, polarity, plug dimensions and charging characteristics for the battery and its battery-management system.

An incompatible or poor-quality charger may:

  • overcharge or undercharge the battery;
  • overheat the charger, connector or battery;
  • damage the charging port or battery-management system;
  • reduce battery performance or lifespan; or
  • increase the risk of electrical failure and fire.

If the original charger is lost or damaged, obtain the correct replacement from the manufacturer, authorised distributor or a reputable specialist who can confirm compatibility. Do not rely on connector appearance alone.

Avoid improvised charging arrangements. Do not modify charging plugs, reverse wiring, bypass safety systems or use unverified adapters to connect an unsuitable charger.

Where Should You Charge the Battery?

London Fire Brigade advises charging e-bike and e-scooter batteries on hard, flat surfaces where heat can dissipate and away from main routes and exits.

A suitable location should:

  • be dry and reasonably ventilated;
  • have a hard, stable surface;
  • be away from paper, fabrics, bedding and other combustible materials;
  • not obstruct a hallway, staircase, doorway or escape route;
  • have a working smoke alarm nearby; and
  • allow you to notice abnormal heat, smell, noise or smoke quickly.

Do not charge batteries on beds, sofas or other soft furnishings. Do not cover the charger or battery while charging, as this can prevent heat from dissipating.

Should You Charge Overnight?

No. Do not charge an e-bike or e-scooter battery while you are asleep. You should also avoid charging while away from the property or when nobody is available to respond to a problem.

Even where a battery has a battery-management system, it should not be treated as a substitute for correct charging, suitable equipment and supervision.

Charging After Riding

Batteries can become warm during use, particularly after hills, rapid acceleration, high assistance levels or long journeys. Let a warm battery cool naturally before charging.

There is no universal waiting time that applies to every battery. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and only charge within the specified temperature range.

If the battery remains unusually hot after normal use, becomes hot while switched off or develops an unfamiliar smell, do not charge it.

Charging in Cold Weather

Cold temperatures can temporarily reduce range and power. Charging a lithium-ion battery below its permitted temperature can also cause damage.

If the battery has been stored or used in very cold conditions:

  • bring it into a suitable dry location if the manufacturer allows removal;
  • let it warm naturally to an approved charging temperature;
  • do not place it beside a radiator or use direct heat;

Should You Fully Discharge the Battery?

Modern lithium-ion batteries do not normally need to be fully discharged before charging. Repeatedly running the battery completely flat can place additional stress on it and may cause problems if the product is then stored without being recharged.

Charge according to the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid deliberately draining the battery to zero. If the product will be stored for a long period, use the storage charge level and recharging interval specified by the manufacturer.

Long-Term Battery Storage

Before storing an e-bike, e-scooter or removable battery:

  • inspect it for damage or unusual behaviour;
  • use the manufacturer’s recommended storage charge level;
  • switch the product off completely;
  • store it in a dry location away from direct sunlight;
  • avoid extreme heat, freezing temperatures and substantial temperature changes;
  • keep it away from combustible materials and escape routes;
  • check it periodically; and
  • recharge it at the interval specified by the manufacturer.

Do not leave a depleted battery unused for many months. Deep discharge during storage can make the battery difficult or impossible to recover safely.

Battery Warning Signs

Stop using and charging the battery if you notice:

  • swelling, bulging or distortion;
  • cracks, punctures or impact damage;
  • leaking fluid or unusual residue;
  • excessive or unexplained heat;
  • a strong chemical, burning or unfamiliar smell;
  • hissing, crackling or popping sounds;
  • smoke, sparks, scorch marks or melted connectors;
  • serious water ingress or corrosion;
  • repeated unexpected shutdowns;
  • a sudden, substantial loss of range; or
  • charging that takes much longer than normal.

Do not open the battery casing or attempt to replace individual cells at home. Do not continue charging a suspect battery inside a protective bag or container. A fire-resistant storage product cannot make a damaged battery safe.

What to Do if a Battery Smokes or Catches Fire

Lithium-ion battery fires can develop quickly and produce intense heat and toxic smoke.

  • Do not touch, carry or attempt to move a smoking or burning battery.
  • Leave the property immediately.
  • Close doors behind you if it is safe to do so.
  • Call 999 from a safe location.
  • Do not re-enter the property.

Make sure everyone in the household knows the escape plan and that charging equipment never blocks the route out.

Battery Disposal and Recycling

Do not place an e-bike or e-scooter battery in household rubbish or ordinary kerbside recycling. Lithium-ion batteries require specialist handling.
