Electric bikes can be used on UK roads and cycle paths if they meet the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle, or EAPC, rules. This usually means the bike must have pedals, a motor with a maximum continuous rated power of 250W, and electric assistance that cuts off at 15.5mph (25km/h).
Some high-power or off-road electric bikes may exceed these limits. If a model does not meet EAPC rules, it may be suitable only for private land use with the landowner's permission, unless it is correctly registered, insured, and approved as a motor vehicle.
