    FAQ

Electric Bike FAQs: Legal Use, Insurance, Range & Maintenance

Electric bikes can be used on UK roads and cycle paths if they meet the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle, or EAPC, rules. This usually means the bike must have pedals, a motor with a maximum continuous rated power of 250W, and electric assistance that cuts off at 15.5mph (25km/h).

Some high-power or off-road electric bikes may exceed these limits. If a model does not meet EAPC rules, it may be suitable only for private land use with the landowner's permission, unless it is correctly registered, insured, and approved as a motor vehicle.

If your electric bike meets UK EAPC rules, you do not legally need insurance, road tax or vehicle registration to ride it on public roads. However, many riders still choose optional bicycle or e-bike insurance for theft, accidental damage and public liability cover.

If an electric bike does not meet EAPC rules, for example because it exceeds the legal motor power or assisted speed limits, it may be treated as a motor vehicle. In that case, different legal requirements may apply, including registration, insurance, licence and helmet rules.

The best electric bike depends on how you plan to ride. Folding e-bikes are practical for storage, transport and shorter journeys. Step-through e-bikes are easier to mount and comfortable for everyday use. Fat-tyre e-bikes offer extra grip and stability on rougher Terrain. Trekking, hybrid and mountain-style e-bikes are better suited to longer rides, hills and mixed Terrain.

If you are unsure, consider where you will ride most often, how much range you need, whether you need to store the bike indoors, and whether UK road legality is important to you.

Electric bike range depends on battery size, rider weight, Terrain, tyre pressure, weather, assistance level and riding style. Manufacturer range figures are usually based on ideal test conditions so that real-world range can be lower, especially on hills, in cold weather, or at higher assistance levels.

For short local rides, a smaller battery may be enough. For longer journeys, heavier riders, hilly areas or frequent high-assist riding, a larger battery is usually the better choice.

Most electric bikes are designed to handle light rain and normal road spray, but they should not be submerged, pressure-washed or left exposed to heavy rain for long periods. Water resistance can vary by model, so always check the individual product details and avoid riding through deep puddles or flooded roads.

After wet rides, dry the bike properly, especially around the battery, display, controller area, charging port and electrical connections. Water damage may not be covered by warranty, so indoor storage and sensible care are strongly recommended.

Yes. Electric bikes should be serviced regularly to keep them safe, reliable and efficient. Important checks include brakes, tyres, chain, gears, spokes, lights, battery condition and electrical connections.

High-power, heavy or fat-tyre e-bikes may need more frequent checks because the motor, brakes, tyres and drivetrain work harder. Regular servicing helps extend the life of the bike and can prevent small issues becoming expensive repairs.

    Buying Advice

    Buying Advice

Unfortunately, if you purchase an electric bike or electric scooter from an online-only seller, you may encounter difficulty receiving repairs or service, or with having a warranty honoured.

Sadly, we here at Electric Scooters London receive numerous calls for service from unhappy buyers who bought from online-only sellers. But unfortunately, if we are not an authorized dealer of a particular brand, we are often unable to order parts, or are not equipped to make certain repairs. And in the case of knock-off or off-brand bikes, replacement parts simply may not available anywhere for anyone.
