Electric Bike & E-Scooter Buying Advice UK | Electric Scooters London

Buying an Electric Bike or Private-Land E-Scooter?

Choosing the right electric bike or private-land e-scooter is not just about price, speed or range. It is also about legal use, rider suitability, battery size, build quality, spare parts, servicing, warranty support and long-term reliability.

At Electric Scooters London, we help customers choose products that match their needs, budget and intended use. We also support customers after purchase through our London workshop, with repairs, servicing, diagnostics, replacement parts and product advice.

1) Choose the Right Product for Your Use

Before buying, think carefully about how and where the product will be used.

  • Electric bikes: suitable for commuting, leisure riding, local journeys, fitness and everyday transport, provided the bike is legal and suitable for your intended use.
  • Folding electric bikes: useful where storage space is limited, or the bike needs to fit in a car, flat, office, or public transport setting.
  • Fat-tyre electric bikes: often better suited to comfort, rougher surfaces, and mixed Terrain, but they can be heavier and may require more storage space.
  • Private-land e-scooters: compact, powerful and enjoyable to ride, but privately owned e-scooters are not currently legal for use on UK public roads, pavements, cycle lanes, parks or other public places.
  • Parts and accessories: chargers, tyres, brake pads, locks, helmets, bags and replacement components should be chosen carefully for compatibility and safety.

2) Understand UK E-Bike Rules

In the UK, an electric bike must comply with the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) rules to be treated as a normal bicycle for road use.

In general, this means the bike must have pedals that can propel it, motor assistance must cut off at 15.5 mph / 25 km/h, the motor must not exceed 250W continuous rated power, and the rider must be aged 14 or over.

High-powered, modified, unlocked, or throttle-controlled models may not be road-legal unless they meet the required legal conditions. Customers should always check whether a product is suitable and legal for their intended use before riding.

3) Understand UK E-Scooter Rules

Privately owned e-scooters are currently not permitted for use on UK public roads, pavements, cycle lanes, parks or other public places.

Unless UK law changes, privately owned e-scooters may only be used on private land with the landowner's permission.

Electric Scooters London does not encourage or promote the unlawful use of privately owned e-scooters in public places. Customers are responsible for checking current law and using products safely, legally and responsibly.

4) Check Range Carefully

Advertised range is usually an estimate and can vary significantly in real-world use.

Actual range depends on rider weight, Terrain, hills, wind, temperature, tyre pressure, battery age, riding mode, speed, load and maintenance. A product advertised with a long maximum range may achieve less in everyday riding, especially in cold weather, on hills, or with heavier riders.

If range is important to you, consider battery capacity, riding conditions, and realistic use rather than relying solely on the maximum advertised figure.

5) Think About Weight, Size and Storage

Electric bikes and e-scooters can be heavier than they look online. Battery size, motor size, frame design, tyre type and suspension all affect weight.

Before buying, check whether you can safely lift, move, fold, store, and charge the product. This is especially important if you live in a flat, have stairs, limited storage space, or need to load the product into a car.

6) Look Beyond the Initial Price

A cheaper product is not always better value if spare parts are hard to find, the battery is small, support is limited, or repairs are difficult.

When comparing products, consider:

  • Battery capacity and realistic range
  • Brake type and stopping performance
  • Tyre size and puncture risk
  • Rider height and weight suitability
  • Availability of spare parts
  • Warranty terms and support
  • Repair and servicing options
  • Whether the product is legal for your intended use

7) Buy from a Retailer That Can Support You

Electric bikes and e-scooters are not simple disposable gadgets. They contain batteries, motors, controllers, displays, wiring, brakes, tyres, and moving parts that may require maintenance, adjustment, or repair over time.

Buying from a retailer with real product knowledge and workshop support can make a big difference. At Electric Scooters London, we provide product advice before purchase and practical support after purchase, including diagnostics, servicing, repairs, parts and manufacturer support where applicable.

If you are not buying from us, we still recommend choosing a reputable UK retailer with clear warranty terms, availability of spare parts, proper contact details, and genuine after-sales support.

8) Maintenance Matters

Electric bikes and e-scooters require regular inspection, servicing and maintenance, like any other vehicle.

Brakes, tyres, bolts, folding mechanisms, handlebars, lights, cables, chains, bearings, batteries and chargers should be checked regularly. Poor maintenance can cause faults, reduce safety, impair performance, and shorten the product's life.

Before each ride, check that the product feels safe, brakes properly, has suitable tyre pressure, and has no loose, damaged or unusual parts.

9) Battery and Charging Advice

Lithium-ion batteries should be charged, stored and used with care. Always use the correct charger supplied with the product or specifically approved for it.

Do not charge a battery that is swollen, leaking, damaged, unusually hot, smells strange, makes noise, has suffered impact damage or appears unsafe. Store batteries in a dry, suitable environment and avoid exposing electrical products to heavy rain, flooding or damp storage conditions.
