The Xiaomi M365 and M365 Pro remain two of the most widely used electric scooters in the UK. Although they are generally reliable, ageing batteries, punctures, worn brakes, loose folding mechanisms and electrical faults are increasingly common as these scooters get older.
This guide explains the safe checks you can perform at home, the likely causes of common Xiaomi M365 problems and when the scooter should be inspected by a professional repair technician.
Stop riding immediately if:
- The folding mechanism, stem or handlebars feel loose.
- The brake lever reaches the handlebar or braking performance has deteriorated.
- A tyre is flat, split, bulging or coming away from the rim.
- The scooter has a damaged motor cable or exposed wiring.
- The battery becomes unusually hot, swollen, damaged or produces an unusual smell.
- The scooter has suffered significant water ingress or impact damage.

Checks to perform before every use
Perform these checks while the scooter is switched off and disconnected from its charger:
- Tyres: Look for low pressure, cuts, embedded objects, bulges and excessive tread wear.
- Brakes: The lever should feel firm and should not pull all the way to the handlebar.
- Folding mechanism: Confirm that the latch closes fully and that the stem has no unusual movement.
- Throttle: Make sure it moves freely and returns immediately when released.
- Wheels: Check that both wheels are secure and rotate without severe drag or side-to-side movement.
- Cables: Look for pinched, stretched, split or exposed wiring, especially around the stem and front motor.
- Lights and reflectors: Confirm that they are present, secure and working.
- Charging port: Keep the protective cover closed and check that the port is dry and undamaged.
Xiaomi M365 will not switch on.
Start by connecting the correct Xiaomi-compatible charger to a working wall socket. Inspect the charging plug and the scooter's external charging port without inserting tools or metal objects.
If the scooter has been stored with an empty battery for an extended period, the battery may have become deeply discharged. A battery, battery-management system, dashboard or controller fault can also leave the scooter completely unresponsive.
Do not remove the deck cover or attempt to bypass the battery-management system. Lithium-ion battery diagnosis should be carried out using appropriate equipment by an experienced technician.
Xiaomi M365 will not charge.
On the original-style charger, the indicator is normally green when the charger is powered but not charging, red while charging, and green again when charging is complete.
- Check the wall socket with another suitable appliance.
- Inspect the charger, cable and plug for cuts, heat damage or bent contacts.
- Make sure the scooter and charging port are completely dry.
- Allow a scooter that is unusually hot or cold to return to normal indoor temperature before attempting to charge it.
- Check whether the charging plug fits securely without forcing it.
Use the correct approved charger for the scooter. A plug that physically fits does not guarantee that its voltage, polarity and charging characteristics are suitable.
If the indicator remains green when connected, does not illuminate, behaves unusually,y or the charger becomes excessively hot, disconnect it. The charger, charging port, internal wiring, battery or battery-management system may require professional testing.
Scooter powers on but does not accelerate.
The standard M365 system uses kick-start operation. The scooter must normally be moving at approximately 5km/h before the throttle engages. Test this only in a clear, safe area on private land.
If the scooter still does not accelerate:
- Check the display or beep sequence for an error code.
- Make sure the throttle moves freely and returns when released.
- Check that the brake lever is fully returning to its normal position.
- Look for visible damage to the motor cable near the front wheel.
- Restart the scooter once, but do not repeatedly reset or operate it if a fault returns.
A failed throttle, brake sensor, dashboard, motor Hall sensor, controller or wiring connection normally requires proper electrical diagnosis.
Xiaomi M365 error codes and beeping
The M365 can report faults using a displayed number or a sequence of long and short beeps. One long beep represents ten,n and each short beep represents one. For example, one long beep followed by four short beeps indicates error 14.

Low range, poor acceleration or loss of power
Reduced range does not always mean that the battery has failed. Common causes include:
- Underinflated tyres
- Cold weather
- Steep gradients or repeated acceleration
- Higher rider or luggage weight
- A dragging brake or damaged wheel bearing
- An ageing or unbalanced battery pack
Check the tyre pressure and, with the scooter switched off, make sure the wheels are not obstructed or suffering from severe brake drag. A small amount of range variation is normal, but a sudden reduction, unexpected shutdown or rapidly falling battery display should be investigated.
Tyre pressure, punctures and wheel problems
For standard pneumatic tyres, Xiaomi's maintenance guidance recommends approximately 45–50 PSI and checking the pressure every 20–30 days. Always confirm the correct pressure for the tyre currently fitted to your scooter and do not exceed the tyre manufacturer's marked limit.
Low pressure allows the inner tube to move and pinch against the tyre, increasing the likelihood of punctures. It also increases rolling resistance and can reduce range.
Do not ride with a flat tyre, damaged sidewall, exposed casing, bulge or loose wheel. Xiaomi M365 tyre replacement can be physically demanding, and incorrect installation may damage the tube, motor cable, wheel fasteners or brake alignment.
Brake adjustment and brake noise
The Xiaomi M365 combines an electronic front brake with a rear mechanical disc brake. Before riding, confirm that the brake lever feels firm and that the scooter resists being pushed when the brake is applied.
Common brake problems include:
- A stretched or frayed brake cable
- Worn or contaminated brake pads
- A bent or misaligned brake disc
- A sticking brake lever or sensor
- Loose calliper or wheel components
Stop riding if braking performance has deteriorated, the lever reaches the grip, the cable is damaged,d or the disc is badly distorted. Brake adjustment affects both stopping performance and wheel drag, so have it checked professionally if you are uncertain.
Loose folding stem or handlebar movement
Movement in the stem or folding mechanism should never be ignored. Check that the folding lever closes correctly, the safety mechanism engages, and there are no cracks, bent parts or missing fasteners.
Do not continue tightening parts in an attempt to compensate for a worn folding hook, damaged pivot or distorted mechanism. Excessive tightening can also damage components. If play returns after adjustment or the scooter has suffered a collision, arrange a professional inspection before riding again.
Important notice for early M365 scooters
Xiaomi issued a safety campaign concerning the aluminium-alloy folding hook fitted to certain M365 scooters manufactured between September 2017 and October 2018. Owners of an early M365 should consult Xiaomi's official M365 safety notice and contact Xiaomi regarding current inspection or repair options.
Water ingress and cleaning
The M365 is water-resistant to a limited degree, but it is not waterproof. Avoid riding in rain, standing water or deep puddles, and never immerse or pressure-wash the scooter.
Use a lightly damp cloth for cleaning and keep water away from the dashboard, charging port and deck seals. If water may have entered the scooter, switch it off and do not charge it. Arrange an inspection, particularly if the display, motor or battery behaves abnormally.
